Boost Your Thinking Skills with "6 Thinking Hats"
A simple method to improve the quality of decisions
Ed de Bono, a renowned psychologist and author, introduced the concept of "6 Thinking Hats” in his book of that title. An easy to understand and implement structured approach to thinking that encourages creativity, collaboration, and well-rounded decision-making.
This method of scrutinisation is perfect in the collect phase of activity in a workshop. Six people wear a different coloured hat that represent: logic, emotion, risk, value, creativity and an oversight of them. Each person takes it in turn to consider the different approaches to inform a decision.
By donning different metaphorical or actual hats, your team can explore various perspectives and uncover new insights. These hats are:
The White Hat:
Focusing on what’s logical from facts and information. This hat encourages objective analysis and data-based thinking. It would be the approach Star Trek’s Spock would use; although I can’t imagine him wearing a baseball cap :/
The Red Hat:
Embracing emotions and intuition. This hat allows for gut feelings and emotional responses to be considered, providing valuable insights. Your gut is your second brain.
The Black Hat:
Playing the devil's advocate. This hat promotes critical thinking by highlighting potential risks, challenges, and drawbacks.
The Yellow Hat:
Encourages a sunnier outlook, optimism and positive thinking. This hat seeks to identify benefits, opportunities, and possibilities. Where’s the value or size of the prize?
The Green Hat:
Stimulating creativity and generating new ideas. This hat fosters brainstorming, out-of-the-box thinking, and innovation for growth.
The Blue Hat:
Taking a meta-perspective. This hat facilitates organisation, planning, and control of the thinking process itself. All other perspectives need to have been heard and understood which informs which colour hat has the most weight to aid the decision.
Incorporate these metaphorical hats into your thinking routine, and unlock new possibilities in your personal and professional life.
